Rumara Jewett
Painter
Saratoga
Springs , New York
I work to convey the personality of my subjects. I
specialize in painting animals, working from the feel of days spent
with them in pastures and barns. Each animal presents his or herself
as unique and precious, and I try to capture the distinct essence
of each creature for the viewer. The feel of a handsome scenic vista
and the feel of a human model are, though different, equally rich.
I use the array of color, value and textural effects possible within
the medium of oil to develop my interpretations.
Paintings offer a window for translation of their
subject matter. Most important is that the viewer feels a correspondence
between my painting, and the feeling that they take away from seeing
and meeting the subject themselves. This means that a portrait of
a person looks like it shows the personality of that person. Hopefully
it also means that a painting of a horse race or a lake, sets the
viewer up to feel similar to when they are at that race or visiting
that lake.
My teachers have included contemporary Chinese Master
Hong Nian Zhang, portrait artist Lois Woolley, and figurative painter
Eric Angeloch. The FrameWork Gallery shows a collection of my miniatures.
The Saratoga Coffee Traders Gallery shows larger pieces in Saratoga.
The Tobias Gallery on the Old South Wharf in Nantucket, shows larger
pieces during their season. For a full collection of available works,
